Mrs. Sonora Smart Dodd of Washington thought independently of the holiday one Sunday in 1909 while listening to a Mother's Day sermon at the Central Methodist Episcopal Church at Spokane, and she arranged a tribute for her father in June 19, 1910. She was the first to solicit the idea of having an official Father's Day observance to honor all fathers.
Where Mother's Day was met with enthusiasm, Father's Day was met with laughter. The holiday gathered attention slowly, but for the wrong reasons: it was the target of much satire, parody and derision, including jokes from the local newspapers.
In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge recommended that Father’s Day become a national holiday. President Johnson in 1966, designated the third Sunday in June to be Father’ Day. Finally in 1972, President Richard Nixon, instituted Father’s Day as a National Observance.
Today, Father's Day is celebrated on a variety of dates worldwide and typically involves giving Father’s Day gifts, and special dinners to fathers and family-oriented activities.

So, why has Father's Day had such a rocky past? It seems very interesting that a holiday to honor and celebrate every hard working, family loving, provider was originally met with satire, parody and the brunt of newspaper cartoonists. Though out history millions of men have dedicated their lives, times, talents and wealth to the idea that if they work hard their children can and will have a better life than they have.
Instead of making dad the brunt of a joke, show him how much you love and appreciate the life he has provided his family.
If we could ask a hundred dad's what they wanted most for Father's Day, I bet the majority of them would want to spend time with their kids, and more specifically they would want their kids, to want to spend time with them!
Beyond spending time, what better way to show dad how much you love him than to give him a personalized gift that vividly reminds him of some special time the two of you shared. TreasuresFromBaby.com has just those items, like a custom tapestry wall hanging, that takes one of your dad's favorite photos and weaves the image into an heirloom quality tapestry that will quickly become the centerpiece of any room.
How about a photo throw for dad's dean, man cave or football room? TreasuresFromBaby.com has a wide variety of woven, knit and fleece printed afghan blankets that capture that favorite photo image and never lets it go.
So this June 21st, don't forget Dad, spend some quality time talking about that favorite vacation, camping trip or game and once you've stopped laughing about those good times, give dad a personalized gift that we remind him of that day forever.
God Bless Dads Everywhere,
Treasure Maker
